The Position:The City of Beaverton is seeking an Assistant City Attorney 1 to provide legal support to the City Attorney's Office. This position is responsible for reviewing and responding to public records requests and subpoenas and asserting applicable exemptions. The position also assists senior attorneys and prosecutors by conducting legal research across a wide array of practice areas, drafting and reviewing legal documents, supporting procurement and public contracting, and serves as a backup prosecutor in the Beaverton Municipal Court.
This is a full-time, exempt, Management 2 (M2) position. There is one vacancy.

Responsibilities:
- Locate and review records related to public records requests and document subpoenas. Identify and apply appropriate exemptions and objections. Coordinate with staff and advise on public records and subpoena issues.
- Draft, review, and revise contracts, agreements, deeds, ordinances, resolutions, and memoranda to provide legal protection to the city in conformance with applicable federal, state and local laws.
- Confer with senior attorneys and advise city staff on legal questions pertaining to their respective powers, duties, functions, and obligations.
- Provide legal education and training to city staff on general government topics including public records, public meetings, and ethics.
- Serve as backup prosecutor for criminal and non-criminal matters in the Beaverton Municipal Court. Responsibilities may include:
- Reviewing police reports
- Charging appropriate offenses
- Negotiating dispositions
- Preparing motions
- Trying cases
- Filing post-conviction show cause orders
- Maintaining accurate records within the electronic case management system
- Assist in civil litigation, including drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs; participate in discovery, mediations, arbitration, or administrative hearings.
- Attend public meetings and provide legal advice to governing bodies.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Law degree from a fully accredited law school; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.
Licensing and special requirements
- Membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar, or ability to obtain membership within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to pass reference checks and education verification, and satisfy the requirements of a background check, including Criminal Justice information Services (CJIS) fingerprints.
- Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment drug screen.
- Within 30 days of hire the successful candidate will be required to receive CJIS certification.

Compensation:
Wage range: $7,350.42 - $9,851.25 monthly
Starting pay within the posted range is based on a review of your related work experience, as required by the Oregon Equal Pay Act. We compare the experience shown in your application materials with the qualifications for the position. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will start at step one. Applicants whose work history clearly demonstrates additional directly related experience may be placed at a higher step within the range.
