Job Description and Duties:
Under the general direction of the Chief Counsel of the Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC), the Assistant Chief Counsel plans, supervises, directs and reviews the work of subordinate attorneys and provides indirect supervision of support personnel within the DWC Legal Unit.

The Assistant Chief Counsel is expected to be knowledgeable in all aspects of the California workers' compensation system, which encompasses the administration and adjudication of claims, the Workers' Compensation Information System, Carve-out programs, the Medical Treatment Utilization Schedule and Drug Formulary, treating physician reporting, utilization review and Independent Medical Review, the medical-legal evaluation system, fee schedules and Independent Bill Review, Medical Provider Networks, the Subsequent Injuries Benefits Trust Fund, the Uninsured Employers Benefits Trust Fund, the Return to Work Supplement Program, and Audit. The Assistant Chief Counsel is further expected to be knowledgeable about the California Court system, California laws regarding the legislative process, the regulatory process, and Public Records Act procedures, and the American with Disabilities Act.

Working Conditions:
This position is located at: 1515 Clay St, Oakland, CA 94612.

The duties of this position are performed indoors in an office equipped with standard or ergonomic office equipment, as appropriate. The position allows for telework and/or hybrid work in accordance with CalHR's and the DIR's telework policy and procedures. The position requires the ability for prolonged sitting and to work at a computer for extended periods of time and to move and transport office items in a safe manner. The incumbent may be required to travel.
