The City of Topeka's Criminal Prosecution division is seeking a licensed attorney to join its team as an Assistant Attorney. This is an excellent opportunity to gain courtroom experience, develop strong litigation and research skills, and make a meaningful impact in the community through public service.What You'll Do:
- Prosecute pro se and court appointed represented misdemeanor and traffic cases in Municipal Court under the direction of the Chief of Prosecution and/or the City Attorney.
- Prepare pleadings, memoranda, legal briefs and other documents for review.
- Respond to questions from the public and city staff regarding city ordinances, state statutes and city policy.
The ideal candidate:
- Has knowledge of Federal and State statutes and City ordinances.
- Is skilled in organization and time management.
- Has the ability to prioritize tasks and exercise sound judgement.
- Possesses excellent communication skills with the ability to explain statutes, ordinances, policies and procedures to all levels of the community and organization.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school with at least two years of experience in the legal profession as a licensed attorney.
- Licensed to practice law in the state of Kansas.
- Must pass an extensive background check, including a Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check.
