The Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter represents all State executives, officials, departments, boards, agencies, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties. Such representation includes participation in litigation, transactional matters, and giving day-to-day legal advice to a wide variety of State entities. The Attorney General's Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 21 regular divisions within 6 sections.

About the Real Property and Transportation Division
The Real Property and Transportation Division is part of the Civil Law Section. The Division represents the Tennessee Department of Transportation in its acquisition of property and property rights for public use through eminent domain. The Division has offices in Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Jackson.

Job Overview:
This position offers a promising opportunity for an attorney to build expertise in jury trial litigation, eminent domain law, and resolution of real property disputes. Our attorneys serve as front line courtroom counsel for the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) in its eminent domain matters throughout counties in Middle and East Tennessee.

Job Duties:
  • Representing the State of Tennessee in a variety of real property litigation matters.
  • Primary concentration on all phases of eminent domain litigation on behalf of TDOT.
  • Collaborating with this Office's attorneys and staff in other regional locations (Knoxville, Chattanooga, Jackson, and Memphis), as assigned.
  • Travel is required, primarily day trips, within the Middle and East Tennessee regions.
  • Self-directed research and analysis commensurate with a zealous and effective advocacy of the State's property rights vis-à-vis private landowners' constitutional rights.

Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate and Tennessee bar admission, or ability to apply for admission without examination.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Affirmed successful negotiation skills or training for same.
  • Real estate law experience and jury trial experience a plus.
  • Ability to function independently in all aspects of civil litigation, including research and document drafting, with minimal oversight
