The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other ​​statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

The OAG is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) representing the State Highway Administration (SHA), a modal administration within the Maryland Department of Transportation. This position offers the opportunity to engage in diverse and complex legal work that impacts transportation infrastructure across the State. The AAG will represent SHA in state and federal courts and in administrative proceedings involving employment matters, environmental issues (including compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act), condemnation actions, and other litigation. The position requires managing complex civil litigation, including drafting and revising pleadings and motions, conducting discovery, arguing significant motions and appeals, and litigating cases before judges and juries. Litigation may occur throughout Maryland, and the attorney will handle cases both independently and as part of a team.

In addition to litigation responsibilities, the AAG will provide legal advice and counsel to SHA on a wide range of matters. These include employment and personnel issues, environmental compliance and mitigation, real estate transactions, highway construction and maintenance, review of proposed legislation and regulations, procurement, agreements with public and private partners, compliance with the Public Information Act, and other transportation-related legal issues. This position requires strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate effectively with agency leadership and stakeholders.

Experience: Candidate for this position will have a minimum of five (5) years of legal experience with at least two (2) years of litigation experience. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in complex civil litigation, a strong academic background, and a proven record of excellence. They should demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and guide litigation teams through challenging, high-stakes cases. Outstanding written and oral advocacy skills, strategic and analytical thinking, and the intellectual agility to address sophisticated legal issues are essential. Additional qualifications that will enhance an application include significant jury trial experience, experience with expert witnesses, and proficiency with electronic discovery. Experience in any of the following areas is a plus: employment; personnel; environmental; condemnation, real estate title and transactions; and tort. Maryland Bar admission or the ability to waive in is required.
