The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is hiring a dedicated and motivated attorney for an Assistant Attorney General position with the Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau (CFP) in New York City. CFP is seeking an attorney to join a vibrant enforcement team that is committed to protecting the interests of the most vulnerable New Yorkers from deceptive and fraudulent practices. The Bureau conducts investigations and litigates in a variety of areas involving consumer protection that often have national impact. CFP covers a wide portfolio of consumer issues, with a focus on predatory lending, debt collection, housing, financial services, student lending, telecommunications, and health claims. For example, CFP is a leader in the area of student loans and for-profit educational institutions, including investigating and litigating deceptive practices by for-profit schools and student loan servicers, participating in Department of Education rulemaking, and promoting policies at the state and federal level to assist student loan borrowers and ensure that they receive the protections to which they are entitled. CFP is also actively involved with mortgage servicing and other housing issues.Unfair and deceptive trade
practices are a serious problem in the United States threatening the
proper functioning of the American marketplace. Additionally, these
practices have a significant and adverse effect on communities of color,
financially vulnerable consumers, and honest businesses costing those
who are impacted billions of dollars each year. CFP enforces consumer
protection laws and pursues civil prosecutions against businesses and
individuals engaged in fraudulent, misleading, deceptive, or illegal
trade practices. Cases typically seek injunctive relief, restitution for
consumers, costs, and penalties.
