The Vermont Attorney General's Office has an immediate opening for a full-time assistant attorney general housed in the Environmental Protection Unit. The position is a split position primarily focused in the Environmental Protection Unit, expected to share time with the Consumer Protection Unit, as well as other Divisions as assigned. This position offers the opportunity to engage in meaningful public protection work on behalf of Vermonters and the environment.

The Environmental Protection Unit represents the State of Vermont in state and federal courts in primarily civil litigation, including appeals. The Unit handles environmental cases in multiple areas including water quality, hazardous materials, air quality and climate, forests, agriculture, and land use. The Unit also represents the State in multistate actions of environmental significance; defends the State's interests in environmental matters; helps to counsel agencies; and advises on legislative matters.

The Consumer Protection Unit handles cases in all areas of Vermont's consumer laws, which prohibit businesses from engaging in unfair or deceptive acts or practices. The Unit investigates and litigates allegations of consumer deception; issues consumer protection rules and guidance; appears before the Vermont Legislature on consumer protection issues; comments on federal laws and regulations of interest to Vermont consumers; and conducts public education to encourage fair business practices.

The successful candidate must be a member in good standing or eligible to be admitted to the Vermont bar. Candidates should have a minimum of five years of relevant experience, with a background in environmental litigation strongly preferred. Candidates must have demonstrated excellent legal writing and analysis skills; strong oral advocacy and communication skills; effective time management skills including the ability to self-start; attention to detail; the ability to work well independently and in collaboration with co-counsel and agency clients; and a commitment to excellence.

The position is located at the Attorney General's Office in Montpelier, Vermont. Some travel is expected for court hearings, site visits, and as needed for other job functions.
