The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other ​​statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

The OAG seeks an attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) in the Courts and Judicial Affairs Division. The AAG will primarily handle litigation at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal court and will provide advice and support to all levels of the Judiciary primarily working with the Administrative Office of the Courts, county administrative judges, and court administrators. The duties will include all aspects of defense litigation, including independently handling cases, taking and defending depositions, written discovery, drafting briefs, and appearing in court for motions, hearings, and trials. The position, however, is a heavy motions practice position, often involving complex issues.

The Courts and Judicial Affairs Division, consisting of seven Assistant Attorney Generals, a Deputy Division Chief, and a Division Chief, generally provides legal services including representation and advice to the entire Judicial Branch of State government and two executive agencies: the Maryland Tax Court and the Office of Administrative Hearings. Courts and related entities within the Judicial Branch employ several thousand employees. Attorneys for the Division represent in litigation and give advice to these employees in addition to all state judges and their respective courts, as well as court supporting agencies including the Administrative Office of the Courts. This position will also generally provide advice and representation to the Division's other clients, as needed. These clients include the 24 elected States Attorneys and their respective offices, in addition to the 24 elected Sheriffs and their respective offices. The Division has a dedicated attorney mainly assigned to the States Attorneys, two dedicated attorneys mainly assigned to the Sheriffs, an attorney mainly dedicated to the 24 elected Clerks of Court and their respective offices, and an attorney mainly dedicated to the Orphans Courts and the 24 elected Registers of Wills.

Classification: Assistant Attorney General III

Experience: The ideal candidate will have at least five years' experience and membership in both the Maryland Bar and the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and superior writing and research skills. Significant experience in civil litigation is required. Employment litigation experience including investigating MCCR and EEOC charges and drafting related position statements in addition to civil rights and/or torts litigation is highly desirable. Appellate and trial experience is preferred but not required.

Pro Bono Commitment: The Office of the Attorney General expects its attorneys to demonstrate a sustained commitment to pro bono service. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of meaningful pro bono engagement or a sincere interest in pro bono work as a professional obligation. Once hired, Assistant Attorneys General are expected to fulfill that commitment throughout their employment with the Office through active participation in OAG's Stephen H. Sachs Pro Bono Program or other qualified opportunities. The OAG supports attorneys in meeting the goal set by the Maryland Supreme Court, MD Atty Rules 19-306.1(b), by allowing up to 50 hours work-time to be used for approved pro bono activities.
