Description:
Description:The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking an attorney to join the Home Builder and Home Builder Sales Representative Registration Unit within the Consumer Protection Division (CPD). This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop litigation skills, work on meaningful enforcement matters, and contribute directly to protecting Maryland's consumers in the new‑home construction industry.
The Consumer Protection Division is one of the most active and visible units in the OAG. Its mission is to safeguard Marylanders from unfair, abusive, and deceptive trade practices through enforcement, mediation, education, outreach, and oversight. CPD's work spans a wide portfolio, including major enforcement actions, administrative adjudications, mediation of tens of thousands of consumer disputes, management of the Health Education and Advocacy Unit, administration of the Home Builder Registration and Guaranty Fund, enforcement of data‑privacy laws, victim assistance in identity‑theft cases, and coordination with federal and multistate partners. The AAG will join a collaborative enforcement team of approximately twenty‑three attorneys and a committed group of professional staff.
In this role, the Assistant Attorney General will represent the interests of the unit in matters involving the new‑home construction industry. The attorney will conduct investigations and litigation under the Home Builder Registration Act and the Consumer Protection Act, as well as related statutes including the Custom Home Protection Act, New Home Deposits Act, and New Home Warranty Act. The AAG will also assist in administering the Home Builder Guaranty Fund and will represent the State in consumer claims before administrative bodies and on appeal. Additional responsibilities include responding to public inquiries, educating consumers, and advocating on behalf of the public to promote fair practices in the home‑building marketplace.
This position provides meaningful opportunities to develop as a litigator and work on a mix of administrative and court proceedings. The selected attorney will join a supportive team of three AAGs and several non‑attorney staff who work collaboratively to carry out CPD's enforcement priorities. Success in this role requires strong analytical and writing skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to the mission of the OAG and CPD.
If you are passionate about consumer protection, interested in litigation and enforcement work, and eager to help ensure fairness in Maryland's new‑home construction industry, we encourage you to apply.
