Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs under limited supervision professional legal work related to the Sexually Violent Predator Act. Will perform duties as dictated by each case. Under general supervision, your job responsibilities will include:
  • Reviews records and reports of individuals referred to the Sexually Violent Predator section by the Prosecution Review Committee.
  • Drafts and files appropriate pleadings in cases referred by the Prosecution Review Committee.
  • Represents the State in each pre-commitment stage of the sexually violent predator proceedings, including pre-commitment probable cause hearings, motion hearings, commitment trials, and appeals.
  • Represents the State in each annual review of a person's commitment to the Sexually Violent Predator Treatment Program, including annual review probable cause hearings, motion hearings, annual review trials, and appeals.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements:
J.D. Degree with at least ten years of practicing experience, at least two of those years appearing in court proceedings in family, circuit, and/or appellate courts in the State of South Carolina or Federal courts.

Necessary Requirements: Must be a member and in good standing with the South Carolina Bar. Must satisfy Rule 403 requirements.

Additional Requirements:
  • Some overnight travel is required.
  • Position may require employee to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must have an above-average understanding of computers, software, and technology (beyond MS Office and related software).
  • Position required to travel and transport files.
  • Position requires up-to-date certification(s).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Requires written skills and oral advocacy, must be flexible to travel.
  • Must be organized and be able to work independently in meeting deadlines.
  • Operates dictation equipment; able to operate computer and/or Westlaw.
  • Must be able to transport files to court.
  • Uses the law library.
