This position is located in the Human Services/Medical Facilities section of the Department of Justice. The primary purpose of this full-time position is to provide a full range of legal services to DHHS including: The defense of personnel/employment administrative appeals and civil actions brought by applicants, former employees and present employees of DHHS. This includes research and the issuance of formal legal opinions relating to personnel and employment issues; providing legal service and representation to the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and the Division of Services for the Blind in OAH hearings and in state and federal courts. This includes research and the issuance of formal legal opinions relating to disability and vocational rehabilitation issues; resolving complaints, and responding to inquiries on legal issues from the public; representing the State on the appeal of criminal cases and perform related duties as required, as well as other work as assigned.

This attorney supports higher level attorneys in specific aspects of their caseloads by investigation of case facts, research of statutory and case law, and development of legal authority to prove the points of law. This position also researches legislative history and legal issues for pending legislative recommendations.

This attorney writes criminal briefs for the state in criminal appeals to the North Carolina Court of Appeals and North Carolina Supreme Court and appears before those courts. As a result, this attorney must be able to argue the State's position in an organized, clear manner in a time-limited setting.

This position is required to travel throughout the State of NC and may require some overnight travel.

If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.

The Starting Salary for a New Hire to This Position is Limited to the Recruitment Range of $70,732 to $89,444. This position is client funded.

Salary offers are based upon the candidate's education and experience related to the positions, as well as departmental budget and equity considerations.

The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the State of North Carolina in court and provides legal advice and representation to most state government departments, agencies, officers, and commissions. The Department also represents the State in criminal appeals from state trial courts, and brings legal actions on behalf of the state and its citizens when the public interest is at stake.

  • The ability to express arguments clearly and logically in oral and written form.
  • The ability to determine issues in various cases.
  • The ability to analyze legal problems and render formal opinions.
  • The ability to creatively develop case strategy and tactics.
