Supplemental Information:The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General, Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for an Assistant Attorney General. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an Assistant Attorney General 1-6, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).
Salary offered will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected. The position domicile is TBD. Offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory background check, drug testing, and reference verification.

Civil Division:
Provides legal representation to the state, its departments and agencies, boards and commissions, and statewide elected officials. The Civil Division is comprised of the Governmental/Litigation, Lands, and Natural Resources, Environmental, Education, and Public Finance sections, and also serves, but not limited to, the following:
Collections:
Represents 25 of Louisiana's public colleges, universities, technical
and community colleges in the collection of educational related
expenses, such as parking tickets, bookstore fees outstanding semester
fees, meal/housing plans, etc. Additionally, the Collections Section
represents 30 state agencies, including the Louisiana Department of
Revenue, in the pursuant of debts owed the State of Louisiana for
various reasons.
Criminal Division:
Assists
federal, state, and local agencies in the investigation and prosecution
of a wide range of criminal matters. The Criminal Division also serves,
but not limited to, the following:
Medicaid Fraud Control Unit: The
Louisiana Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) is a state law enforcement
agency, and it's mission is to investigate and prosecute health care
providers who have defrauded the Medicaid program. The MFCU also
investigates and prosecutes allegations of abuse, and neglect of
residents in health care facilities.
Federalism Division:
Coordinates
the involvement of the Attorney General's Office in cases before the
United States Supreme Court, assists the Louisiana Department of Justice
in preparing and presenting appellate cases in state and federal
courts, directly handles select appeals, and coordinates the involvement
of the Attorney General's Office with Amicus Curiae briefs.
Gaming Division:
Serves as legal advisor and legal representative to all Louisiana gaming regulatory agencies.
Litigation Division:
Defends the State of Louisiana, other State agencies, and State employees in tort claims seeking monetary damages in the areas of Civil Rights, General Liability, Medical Malpractice, Road Hazard, Transportation, and Worker's Compensation.
Public Protection Division:
Provides legal services to the state in the areas of consumer protection and environmental law, insurance receivership, and fair housing.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess a license to practice law in the State of Louisiana.
- Must be in good standing with the Louisiana Bar Association.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the regulatory process under the federal APA, litigating federal APA claims, and be capable of managing complex litigation;
- Demonstrated ability to handle litigations in both federal and state courts;
- Litigation experience within the following areas: Civil Rights, General Liability, Medical Malpractice, Road Hazard, Transportation, Workers Compensation;
- Must possess excellent written, oral advocacy and interpersonal skills;
- Trial experience.
Job Concepts
The duties and requirements of the Assistant Attorney General shall include, but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as the primary or secondary prosecutor on all assigned cases in all phases of prosecution from assignment of the case through final disposition;
- Perform legal research and draft all pleadings, correspondence, or other documents in order to accomplish the above duties;
- Requires attention to detail, strong analytical and problem solving skills, and a commitment to delivering the highest quality of service to the State of Louisiana;
- Be punctual in attendance at all meetings and court appearances related to the prosecution of the assigned case, maintain regular hours, and when required render legal services and work the hours necessary to accomplish the tasks at hand;
- Perform all work in compliance with the Louisiana Constitution, Louisiana Code of Criminal Procedure, Federal Administrative Procedure Act (APA), any applicable local rules of the court, and all other codes of professionalism and ethics;
- Perform any additional duties assigned by supervisors.
