Job Description and Duties:Attorneys in the Criminal Division, Appeals, Writs, and Trials Section (AWT), uphold the Attorney General's constitutional responsibility to represent the People of California in criminal cases. Under the general supervision of the Senior Assistant Attorney General (SAAG), the Chief Assistant Attorney General, the Chief Deputy Attorney General, and the Attorney General, the Supervising Deputy Attorney General (SDAG) in AWT directs and monitors the work of a team of Deputy Attorneys General (DAG), may directly supervise paralegals, and directs the work of support staff; evaluates the performance of DAGs and paralegals; provides training to DAGs and paralegals; handles general administrative matters; interviews and selects, or actively participates in the interview and selection process for DAGs and paralegals; and personally performs with the highest level of independent judgment the most difficult and complex legal work in criminal trials, federal and state habeas corpus matters, and other writs and appeals, including capital litigation.
SDAGs can be called upon to act as the lead attorney on a team assigned to the most difficult and complex cases. SDAGs can be called upon to appear before various federal and state courts and administrative bodies on the most difficult and sensitive cases, and may appear in the highest levels of the appellate courts. SDAGs can be called upon to advise various legal jurisdictions, public officials and representatives of public agencies on legal issues. SDAGs can be called upon to conduct or supervise special investigations of the most sensitive or difficult nature. SDAGs can be called upon to draft and analyze legislative measures and regulations. The work is challenging, and it requires an extensive knowledge of criminal law. Excellent research, writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential.

Working Conditions:
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on DOJ's current telework policy. While DOJ supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises.
