Beyond Legal Aid (“Beyond”) unites lawyers and activists through our innovative community activism lawyering model, working alongside underserved communities to access justice and drive social change. Through these partnerships, Beyond supports communities in creating and running their own activism-law programs—community-located, community-operated, and community-directed legal initiatives. Our programs provide free legal services while also strengthening grassroots movements to address systemic injustices.We are seeking passionate and rising 3L law students interested in applying for 2027 postgraduate public interest law fellowships. The project would begin in August or September of 2027. Beyond has a strong track record of hosting fellows from prestigious programs such as Skadden, Equal Justice Works, Justice Catalyst, and Soros, as well as law school-sponsored postgraduate fellows. This position is contingent upon securing external fellowship funding.
About the Fellowship Role
Beyond fellows will work directly with and under the leadership of community activists and organizers to provide legal services that align with grassroots advocacy efforts. Fellows will be placed in one of Beyond's community-based programs, where legal services are offered in key areas such as: Immigration, Housing, Family law, Criminal records relief, Labor/employment. This is a unique opportunity to engage in community lawyering, integrate legal services with activism, and be part of a model that challenges and transforms traditional legal aid systems.
What We're Looking For:
Ideal candidates will have a strong commitment to social justice, movement lawyering, and community-driven legal work, experience working with community organizers, activists, or grassroots movement, fluency in Spanish (preferred but not required), lived experience within or connections to Beyond's partner communities (preferred).
Work Environment & Compensation
Non-traditional, flexible schedule: Some evening and occasional weekend work required, balanced with flexible scheduling. Community-based work: Fellows will operate in multiple locations, directly engaging with activists and community members. Unionized workplace: Beyond staff are members of the National Organization of Legal Services Workers, UAW Local 2320, AFL-CIO. Compensation follows our collective bargaining agreement (CBA) salary scale. Comprehensive benefits package: Includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k), generous paid time off, travel reimbursement, and coverage of professional fees.
