About the Office:
The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Georgia is a fast-paced and energetic office which seeks to maintain the highest standards of excellence in representing the United States. The office prosecutes cases involving violations of federal law and represents the United States government in criminal and civil matters. The Southern District of Georgia encompasses 43 counties, located in the southeastern region of the state and presently employs 65 federal employees, to include 32 Assistant United States Attorneys. The headquarters office is located in Savannah, Georgia and the branch office is in Augusta, Georgia.

Job Description:
Interns will be assigned to one of the two divisions: Civil or Criminal. Every intern will work under the guidance of an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in conjunction with pending cases. Assignments will include legal research, drafting pleadings and responses and appellate briefs.

If assigned to the Criminal Division, interns will assist attorneys in all phases of criminal prosecution including charging decisions, discovery, pretrial hearings, trials, sentencings, and habeas corpus actions.

If assigned to the Civil Division, interns will assist in all phases of civil litigation including discovery, depositions, pretrial hearings, and trials.

The district will host informative lunch sessions which will include presentations from the AUSAs, the judiciary, and federal agents, as available. The goal of our district's intern program is to introduce them to the federal legal system, develop their legal skills and, above all, to provide a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

The Summer Intern program generally lasts for 8 continuous weeks with an expectation to work 40 hours a week during normal business hours. Vacancy can be filled in either Savannah or Augusta.

Qualifications:
First-year and second-year law students. Must be a U.S. citizen and will be subject to a background investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, due to the sensitive nature of the work handled by the office.
