The Vice President & General Counsel is responsible for serving as the on-site General Counsel of Weirton with the assistance, as needed, of the Assistant Counsel, Associate Counsel, Assistant Vice Presidents (“AVPs”) and Vice President & General Counsel (North Region) (the “North General Counsel”).

Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Certification, And/Or Licensure:
  • Juris Doctor.
  • West Virginia Bar membership or eligibility.

Experience:
At least 5 years of substantial experience in a law firm or in-house legal department with substantive experience in drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts and other instruments documenting arrangements and transactions between parties.

  • Serves as an Associate General Counsel of WVUHS.
  • Serves as the on-site General Counsel of Weirton with the assistance, as needed, of the other Assistant Counsel, Associate Counsel, AVPs and of the North General Counsel.
  • Serves as an integrated component of WVUHS's Legal Services Department and Weirton's Leadership Team.
  • Oversee the on-site, day-to-day legal affairs of Weirton, its subsidiaries, including risk management, contracts, insurance, and day-to-day legal issues.
  • Assists WVUHS Litigation Counsel, as needed, with the handling of malpractice, employment, and other lawsuits against Weirton, its subsidiaries, and handles such matters directly.
  • Assists Associate General Counsels, AVPs, and the North General Counsel, as needed, with the handling of transactions involving Weirton, its subsidiaries, and handles such matters directly.
  • Oversee Medical Staff, credentialing, and licensing matters involving Weirton, its subsidiaries, and its physicians with the assistance, as needed, of Associate General Counsels, AVPs, and the North General Counsel.
  • Assists the Corporate Compliance Officers of WVUHS and Weirton, as needed, on compliance matters.
  • Selects or participates in the selection of the outside counsel to advise and represent Weirton and its subsidiaries.
  • Oversees or participates in the oversight of such outside counsel.
  • Stays up to date on developments in the law.
  • Develops and implements an appropriate educational program for the Boards of Directors, officers, and employees with respect to applicable laws and their legal duties and responsibilities.
  • Performs such other duties as requested by the North General Counsel and President & CEO of Weirton.

  • Knowledge of the general operations of corporations, limited liability companies, and joint ventures.
  • Knowledge of academic medical center operations preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with administration, department heads, medical staff and other hospital personnel.
