Deputy Attorneys General, with critical support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public's access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.
Summary Statement
The Delaware Department of Justice, Criminal Division, Domestic Violence Unit, in New Castle County, seeks a Deputy Attorney General to serve as Unit Head in the management and prosecution in all areas of Domestic Violence prosecution. The Deputy Attorneys General in this Unit are responsible for compiling and producing discovery, drafting motions and briefs, performing research, extending and negotiating plea agreements and taking matters to trial. This is a Unit with a very high volume of cases with a number of court calendars scheduled per week.
Essential Functions:
As Unit Head, this Deputy Attorney General will manage their own caseload while also overseeing the work of other Deputy Attorneys General, as well as administrative and support operations within the Unit. Responsibilities include coordinating assignments, providing training for unit members, and handling other managerial tasks as needed. The Unit Head will also serve on various committees as designated by the State Prosecutor and the New Castle County Chief Prosecutor.
This leadership position will be responsible for making key prosecutorial decisions, including determining which cases to prosecute, which to resolve through plea agreements, and crafting appropriate plea offers on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, they will decide which cases should proceed to trial and personally handle trials for cases not otherwise resolved.
Job Requirements:
The ideal candidate for this role should have strengths in evaluating cases, determining appropriate resolutions, and anticipating legal issues, supported by the ability to conduct accurate and effective research.
Preferred qualifications include specialized experience in domestic violence cases. The Deputy Attorney General must possess or be able to develop strong working relationships with other Deputy Attorneys General, support staff, and court personnel. The ideal candidate must demonstrate the ability and determination to learn and apply relevant laws and court rules effectively. Additionally, they should excel in working with victims of domestic violence and other witnesses essential to court proceedings.
Membership in the Delaware Bar is required.
