CEA is seeking a dedicated and experienced Union Attorney to join our team! The ideal candidate will have a strong background in labor law, collective bargaining, and the representation of union members. As a Union Attorney at CEA, you will serve as the lead negotiator in collective bargaining, provide legal guidance to unions, represent them in arbitration, grievances, and other legal matters, and advocate for public-sector workers to ensure their rights are upheld. This is traditional labor law, union-side position.

CEA serves as professional staff for independent public employee associations and their members. CEA provides services to around 150 employee organizations throughout the state. Our clients are organized under the Meyers-Milias-Brown Act and other related state bargaining laws. They work in cities, counties, school districts, and special districts in California.

Duties of the position include the full range of CEA services in representing public employees and unions in labor and employment matters, including, but not limited to: serving as lead negotiator in collective bargaining; processing grievances and disciplinary appeals; handling arbitrations, Personnel Commission, Civil Service Commission, or Public Employment Relations Board proceedings; representation of individual members in investigatory meetings and medical accommodation meetings; assistance with labor management meetings, meet and confers, and other labor-relations consulting, advice, and organizational assistance, as needed. A desire and skill in writing articles on labor and employment topics that affect public sector workers is also desirable.

Successful candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to representing workers and an interest in collective bargaining. Qualifications include a Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; license to practice law in California; experience in labor law with a focus on union representation; proven experience handling collective bargaining, arbitrations, and other union-related legal matters; strong negotiation, drafting, research, and writing skills; and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus but not required. Successful applicants should also have excellent written and oral communication skills; be highly motivated and willing to learn; exercise sound judgment; creatively solve complex problems; deliver great client service; maintain regular professional interactions with opposing counsel; and can work remotely and travel throughout California as needed.
