As an in-house Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney for The Hartford, you will join a collaborative, team-oriented contemporary work environment that includes a strong focus on work-life balance. This individual shall litigate cases throughout Southern California, primarily in the Los Angeles area and adjacent counties. The Attorney will collaborate extensively with our claim partners and insureds to deliver the best possible result in pending litigation. They will be part of a unique team responsible for providing top quality representation of The Hartford on litigated matters including general liability, commercial and personal automobile accidents, premises liability, products liability and construction site accidents. The selected Attorney will independently handle cases from inception through trial. Key responsibilities include:
  • Analyze intricate substantive and procedural legal and factual issues, conduct extensive, well-reasoned legal research, independently develop and present defense strategies on behalf of clients
  • Prepare pleadings, written discovery, motions, and briefs in support of defense strategies with limited supervision due to expected level of experience and expertise
  • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice, and other services to clients and claim customers in a technology-driven environment
  • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel in a manner consistent with established office procedures
  • Effectuate the prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases.
  • Independently conduct all aspects of litigation including trials, depositions, arbitration, and meditations

Qualifications:
Note- This position may be filled as a Senior or Staff Attorney commensurate with a candidate’s experience. Qualified Senior Staff Attorney candidates will possess the following requirements:
  • Minimum of 7 years of legal practice experience handling tort defense cases
  • Member in good standing of California State Bar
  • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the State of California
  • First chair jury trial expertise is highly-preferred
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties and time are a must
  • Strong communication, computer and technological skills (proficiency in MS Office, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook; and Lexis Nexis) and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required

Qualified Staff Attorney candidates will possess the following requirements:
  • Minimum of 3 years of legal practice experience handling tort defense cases
  • Member in good standing of California State Bar
  • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the State of California
  • Some trial experience is preferred
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties and time are a must
  • Strong communication, computer and technological skills (proficiency in MS Office, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook; and Lexis Nexis) and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required
