Description:
Position Summary:Advise and represent UNO students in misdemeanor criminal and civil litigation. Responsibilities will include legal research, negotiation, resolving legal issues and court representation. Prepare and deliver educational presentations to UNO students on legal topics of importance to them.
Job Duties:
Responsibility Area: Student Legal Representation
Duties:
- Provide legal representation to students
- Conduct legal research
- Draft complaints, petitions, answers, motions, memoranda and briefs
- Electronically file court documents
- Use Nebraska Court System's JUSTICE network to review court records for students
- Negotiate on behalf of students by contacting attorneys, prosecutors and others
- Help students execute plans of action by preparing letters or other documents
- Contact landlords, collection agencies, insurance companies or other parties, to help resolve legal issues or cases
- Represent students in court in accordance with SLS guidelines
- Support students as they resolve legal issues without litigation
- Maintain/update statistical information for attorney hours and types of activities; and number and types of cases

- Prepare and deliver presentations to student groups on legal topics of importance to them
- Develop presentations to educate students regarding their legal rights & responsibilities to help students prevent legal problems
- Review, update, maintain and expand the online legal information and sample documents on the SLS website
- Write and distribute legal information by designing flyers, brochures, posters & presentations

Experience using research tools such as Casemaker, Westlaw, or Lexis-Nexis. Proficient in Google Apps and Microsoft Office Word and Excel. Available to work occasional evenings and weekends.
