For over 50 years, An American Non-Profit Human and Poverty Rights Organization has set the standard for innovation and excellence in social and economic justice. Bet Tzedek is seeking a determined, organized, and zealous attorney to work in our new coordinated service delivery program.

This position is eligible for An American Non-Profit Human and Poverty Rights Organization' hybrid/remote workplace designation. At the discretion of the immediate supervisor, the employee may be required to work in the office or other locations to meet workload/business obligations. This requirement may be on a temporary or ongoing basis.

Requirements:
Essential Duties:
  • Attend monthly clinics to provide legal advice and limited scope representation to individuals who are at risk of eviction or have experienced eviction
  • Collaborate with Bet Tzedek's Community Outreach Coordinator, NCJW|LA, and Community Coalition to develop and review education and training materials
  • Train case managers at social service organizations on how to enforce their clients' general housing rights and fair housing rights
  • Provide legal representation, limited-scope representation, and counsel and advice to tenants and unhoused residents to remove barriers to safe, stable, and affordable housing
  • Litigate landlord-tenant cases, including filing motions to seal eviction records and regularly representing clients in settlement negotiations
  • Provide legal services to prevent and appeal terminations from the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program
  • Enforce the fair housing rights of housed and unhoused individuals by writing demand letters and filing Civil Rights Department complaints
  • Write reasonable accommodation letters to obtain or preserve access to safe, affordable housing
  • Write demand letters to enforce the rights of tenants experiencing address harassment, illegal rent increases, and violations of the implied warranty of habitability

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, Bet Tzedek's mission of equal justice for all and Bet Tzedek's core values of leadership, community-based advocacy, and innovation (required)
  • Active member of California State Bar in good standing (required)
  • Ability to work independently while receiving case support and supervision (required)
  • Minimum two years' experience working in non-profit legal services (preferred)
  • Experience in landlord-tenant law (required)
  • Experience in fair housing law (required)
  • Demonstrated commitment to applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in performance of job duties (required)
