Job Overview:
The staff attorney is a member of the office of general counsel (OGC) and helps provide support and legal advice to the Commissioner of Education, Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) personnel, and the State Special Schools.

Key Responsibilities:
The staff attorney will be expected to support the assistant general counsel for special education with the following tasks:
  • Overseeing the special education dispute resolution processes by investigating allegations that local education agencies violated federal or state special education law.
  • Offering legal counsel on federal and state special education law to other TDOE teams, including the Office of Academics, the Federal Programs and Oversight Division, the Centers of Regional Excellence, and others in the Office of General Counsel.
  • Providing training, guidance, resources, and assistance to local education agencies and families on federal and state special education law.
  • Representing TDOE in any administrative complaint, due process complaint, or mediation request filed against TDOE.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, Juris Doctorate, and license to practice law in Tennessee.
  • Experience practicing special education law is preferred but not required.
