The Senior Recovery Attorney will be part of a team of talented attorneys and Recovery Specialists responsible for representing the subrogation and recovery rights of various health plan clients in third party liability matters. The Senior Recovery Attorney manages a specific backlog of large dollar and complex files. Responsibilities include communicating with all parties involved in the file to protect our clients’ rights, effectively arguing the law in support of recovery rights, and employing advanced negotiation techniques to ensure maximum legal recovery. The Senior Recovery Attorney must stay abreast of all changes in State or Federal Law that impact healthcare subrogation and share that knowledge with the entire Optum legal team as appropriate.

This position is full-time, Monday – Friday. Employees are required to work our normal business hours of 8:00am – 5:00pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime or weekends.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Craft strategic legal arguments to ensure maximum recovery to our clients
  • Employ advanced negotiation techniques to maximize recoveries considering applicable law and relevant facts
  • Collaborate with attorney colleagues and Director of Legal Operations to develop legal strategy and action plans on all files
  • Establish and maintain current knowledge of all relevant State and Federal law
  • Lead and participate in discussions of complex legal issues with clients
  • Apply proper file handling procedures in accordance with Best Practices and Quality Assurance standards
  • Draft all settlement documents necessary to conclude payment and closure of files

Required Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor
  • One or more active law licenses
  • 2+ years minimum working experience in subrogation, torts, contracts or insurance

Preferred Qualifications:
Strong working knowledge of tort law, contracts and civil procedure

  • Required to have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provides information privacy
  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure (if applicable)
  • Must live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service
