The mission of the Idaho Industrial Commission is to fairly administer the Idaho Workers' Compensation Law.
Special Notification: This position is exempt from classified state service and the rules of the Division of Human Resources and the Idaho Personnel Commission.
Responsibilities:
The Idaho Industrial Commission is seeking an Attorney to become a Referee in workers' compensation proceedings. The Industrial Commission has original jurisdiction in workers' compensation litigation and appellate jurisdiction in unemployment insurance proceedings. As hearing officers, Referees hear cases relating to workers' compensation disputes, unemployment insurance and Crime Victims Compensation Program appeals, and write decisions for review by the Commission. Referees may also participate in the Alternate Dispute Resolution (Mediation) process. They may also conduct virtual or in person hearings. This is a full-time (40 hours, M-F), on-site position.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
- Active member in good standing of the Idaho State Bar
- Experience in litigation and/or administrative proceedings
- Experience conducting legal research and drawing legal conclusions
- Experience with word processing software
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong time and case management skills
- Strong legal writing skills. Must possess the ability to recognize, analyze, and articulate treatment of diverse issues arising in Unemployment Appeal cases.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the Judicial Rules of Practice and Procedure under the Idaho Workers' Compensation Law
- Basic mediation skills and an understanding of the Industrial Commissions mediation process
- Some knowledge of Idaho Workers' Compensation and Unemployment Insurance Laws
- Awareness of the programs and departments administered by the Industrial Commission
- Attach two writing samples
