The Opportunity:
We currently have an opportunity for a Lead Coverage Litigation Attorney to join our team in our Plymouth, MN office or remotely in California or Texas. This position is hybrid or remote depending on the location. The Lead Coverage Litigation Attorney independently provides legal representation to the company in coverage disputes before courts, arbitration panels, and other forums. This position advises claim employees in their handling of coverage disputes. A Lead Coverage Litigation Attorney is responsible for trial work of the highest complexity and resolution whether by settlement, trial or appeal. This position may manage assigned staff and/or coach and mentor junior members of the team. Some of the Lead Coverage Litigation Attorney responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Manages a workload of coverage files representing the company. Responsible for maintenance and completion of caseload and trial work of the highest complexity, whether by settlement, trial or appeal.
  • Assists other coverage counsel with strategy, work-up and preparation of significant coverage files for trial. This includes providing advice and counsel to the company on the defense and resolution of coverage disputes.
  • Consults on significant files with staff. Strategizes on resolution of those files and assists in preparing significant matters for trial. May try cases to verdict when necessary.
  • Conducts all appropriate legal action to best protect the interests of the company on all assigned cases. Prepares appeals and performs necessary research on motions.
  • Broad authority to negotiate settlements with plaintiffs' attorneys.
  • May manage a staff, including development, goal setting, skill assessment, staff selection, role alignment, and performance appraisals. Provides frequent communication and measurement of corporate and local goals.
  • Interfaces and provides counsel to other claims' staff as cases develop through trial or resolution.
  • Provides consultation and advice to claims senior management on the proper resolution of files litigated on behalf of the company.
  • Actively provides strategic and tactical input to management on budgetary and office operations.
  • Maintains a strong professional knowledge of legal environments and applies this information effectively

The expertise you bring
  • 15+ years of experience litigating, preferably litigating matters involving specialty insurance coverage
  • Substantial experience with research, discovery depositions, mediations and trial preparation required.
  • 10+ years trial experience in State and Federal Court
  • JD required.
  • Admitted to practice law in at least one state and eligible for pro hac vice admission in other jurisdictions
