Job Summary:
Each Brown County judicial law clerk performs legal research and drafts decisions for the eight circuit judges.

Essential Duties:
  • Reviews, studies, searches, and annotates laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, appeals and other litigated matters.
  • Reads and digests opinions, briefs, and motions and extracts excerpts pertinent to points of law and fact.
  • Prepares decisions, legal memoranda and statement of issues involved, including appropriate suggestions or recommendations to the judge.
  • Compiles references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determinations.
  • Attends courtroom proceedings, including trials and motion hearings.
  • Manages, coordinates and educates law students and college student interns.
  • Performs related functions as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required:
Education and Experience:
Must possess a Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Must be a member of the Wisconsin State Bar or be studying for the Bar.
  • Must comply with CLE requirements to maintain active license to practice law.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of law procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize a computer and the required software.
  • Ability to conduct legal research using both texts and Westlaw (online research).
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to be versatile.
  • Ability to handle multiple cases at one time.
  • Ability to work the required hours of the position.
