As a member of the global employment, benefits and compensation law team, an ideal candidate will be expected to:
  • Counsel HR on compliance with federal and state employment laws and regulations (including ADA, ADEA, Title VII, FMLA, FLSA, FCRA) to ensure sound practices and legal compliance.
  • Counsel Employee Relations with respect to disciplinary actions, terminations of employment, and job eliminations in order to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with applicable law
  • Draft and review various documents, including policies, procedures, communications, legal memoranda and correspondence.
  • Conduct legal research to ensure Cigna's employment policies are consistent with best practices in the locations where we conduct business.
  • Support the development and implementation of internal practices and policies to ensure ongoing compliance with applicable laws and regulations at the local, state, national, and international levels.
  • Participate in and help facilitate internal training sessions.
  • Counsel Global Mobility function in HR with regard to expatriate employee and international relocation issues
  • Partner closely with Benefits, Absence, Return to Work, and Stay at Work team in connection with development and administration of leave and time off policies
  • Review potential concerns relating to restrictive covenant compliance and assist with updating restrictive covenant documents
  • Forge strong relationships with internal clients and external counsel.
  • Partner closely with employment, benefits and compensation law colleagues.
  • Effectively direct, manage, and develop outside counsel where needed.
  • Employ highly polished and effective communication, listening, and writing skills, with a focus on interaction with and reporting to senior attorneys, managers and executive leadership within a global and matrixed organization
  • Participate in and contribute positively to the Cigna Legal community

  • J.D. degree and active Bar membership
  • Minimum of 5 years of employment law experience at a top firm and/or in-house
  • Ability to distill and present complex legal issues to non-lawyers
  • Subject Matter Expertise on FMLA, ADA, and state/local Paid Sick Time requirements
  • Global experience is a plus
  • Employment litigation experience is a plus
  • Employment law experience in healthcare industry is a plus
  • Demonstrated good and practical judgment

For this position, we anticipate offering an annual salary of $132,700 - $221,100, depending on relevant factors, including experience and geographic location.

This role is also anticipated to be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan.
