Purpose of Position:
Prepares and presents case evidence and testimony in court.
Essential Functions:
- Conducts legal research associated with prosecution of assigned cases, reviews related court decisions and legal precedents.
- Reviews complaints filed with Prosecutor's Office, interviews involved parties, otherwise gathers necessary information.
- Prepares case for prosecution, including legal documents and filings such as motions, petitions, etc.
- Represents State in court.
- Prosecutes cases in criminal trials.
- Meets with public about legal rights, responsibilities, and processes involved in seeking court relief.
- Meets with police officers on legal procedures and requirements relating to the performance of their duties.
Non-Essential Functions:
Performs Other Duties as Assigned.
Education and Qualification Requirements:
- A Bachelor's Degree
- Must Have Unlimited License to Practice Law in Indiana
- Doctor of Jurisprudence
- Ability to Effectively and Tactfully Deal with Other People
- Ability to Communicate Well, Both Verbally and In Writing
- Knowledge of Constitutional Law, Criminal and Traffic Law
- Ability to Prosecute a Criminal Jury Trial
- Ability to Make Effective Use of Legal References and Other Research Tools
- Knowledge of Court Procedures, Provisions, and Precedent
- Ability to Separate Relevant Data from Irrelevant Data when Gathering and Presenting Case Evidence
- Ability to Represent Office of Prosecuting Attorney Maintaining Appropriate Standards
Responsibility:
Incumbent Works Within Prescribed and Generally Accepted Legal Practices. Professional Judgment Required in Selecting the Most Appropriate Guidelines to Fit Case at Hand. Incumbent Also Exercises Discretion in Interpreting Precedent. Incumbent Works Independently on Recurring Assignments. Objectives and Desired Results Are Outlined. Supervisor Is Consulted Before Departing from Established or Generally Observed Policy, and Is Available for Consultation. Errors in Work Can Result in Excessive Cost Repercussions to The County and Possible Loss of Individual Liberty or Loss of Life. Incumbent Is Also Responsible for Supervising Secretary.
Working Relationships:
Working Relationships Are with Supervisor, Associates in Same Department, Secretarial Staff, Other County Departments, Law Enforcement Representatives, Governmental Agencies and The General Public for The Purpose of Communicating Factual or Procedural Information, Legal Requirements, Facilitate Compliance, and Render Service to The End of Prosecution of Illegal Activity.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
Work Is Generally Performed in A Standard Office Environment with Stress and Time Deadline Requirements. Incumbent May Be Required to Conduct Office Interviews Outside of Office. Requires Extended Working Hours, and Also May Require Viewing, Handling, and Dealing with Evidence that Is Offensive or Bio-Hazardous.
