Role and Responsibilities:
The Deputy General Counsel will assist the General Counsel with managing K9s For Warriors' (K9s) Legal, Human Resources, and Government Affairs Departments and provide direct supervision and leadership to the company's Warrior Legal Advisor and Human Resources Manager.

Essential Functions:
  • Managing direct reports through establishing clear expectations, providing regular performance feedback, and exemplifying K9s' culture, values, and work ethic by promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, collaboration, civility, productivity, proactive problem solving, and positive communication
  • Researching, providing advice, and ensuring compliance on matters and law (federal, state, and local) pertaining to personnel, labor and employment, disability rights, nonprofit governance, financial reporting, contracts, insurance coverage, risk exposure and management, trademarks and intellectual property, and national corporate expansion
  • Providing leadership to the Human Resources Department
  • Supporting Human Resources and all other K9s' Departments with hiring, coaching, mentoring, disciplining, investigating, and separating employees, as needed
  • Developing and implementing the organization's internal policies and processes
  • Managing legal matters, cases, claims, and litigation assigned to outside legal counsel and obtaining legal opinions, as needed
  • Drafting, approving, editing, and maintaining contracts for all departments of the organization
  • Providing legal guidance and support to the military veterans K9s serves on matters pertaining to disability rights, public access laws, and the use of Service Dogs
  • Developing, overseeing, and supporting K9s' legal information and referral program for Warriors regarding disability rights, and Service Dog laws
  • Administering K9s' employee benefits program and ensuring legal compliance, in collaboration with the Human Resources and Finance Departments
  • Supporting the Government Affairs department through cultivating relationships with elected officials, promoting and advocating for legislation that benefits veterans and the use of Service Dogs, and assisting with government grant administration and compliance
  • Performing all other duties as assigned by the General Counsel

Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Law degree from an accredited university
  • Ten (10) or more years of legal practice
  • Record of litigating labor and employment law cases
  • Other litigation experience preferred
  • Broad-based knowledge of relevant state, federal, and local laws and regulations
  • Senior managerial and executive experience preferred
  • Strong legal, analytical, and administrative skills
  • Persuasive written and oral advocacy
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize legal demands resulting from a fast paced, rapidly growing organization, act quickly, and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of issues facing disabled veterans and an enthusiasm for the K9s For Warriors' mission

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the Warrior Legal Advisor and Human Resources Manager
