Position Summary:
The Deputy General Counsel, Healthcare is the senior legal advisor responsible for providing counsel, representation, compliance advice, legal training, and other support on a worldwide basis to the Company's global $4 billion Healthcare business segment. You will be responsible for managing and handling specialized, complex legal issues relating to commercial matters, business acquisitions and divestitures, labor and employment issues, regulatory compliance, and risk management issues.

You will work on legal issues that will include preparing, drafting, and negotiating business agreements, management of Outside Counsel, litigation management, providing business development support, ensuring corporate compliance, advising business on proper legal and regulatory compliance, risk management, and related business strategy.

*This position is located onsite in Mentor, Ohio.

What You'll do as a Deputy General Counsel, Healthcare
  • Serve as the senior legal advisor to the Healthcare business segment.
  • Provide legal counsel to the business segment's management team on the legal issues associated with strategic initiatives and tactics.
  • Review, evaluate, draft, and negotiate business agreements which properly protect the interests of the Company.
  • Support business development, legal training, and regulatory and corporate compliance activities.
  • Provide legal research support for business management and risk prevention and risk mitigation issues.
  • Supervise litigation and claims associated with the business segment, including management of external legal counsel representing the Company in such cases and claims.
  • Supervise, lead, and develop the staff of attorneys, paralegals, and administrative assistants assigned to the Legal Department's Healthcare support area. Manage outside counsel and other Legal Department service providers to ensure work quality and cost effectiveness.

The Experience, Skills and Abilities Needed
Required:
  • Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 15 years of legal profession experience, with firm or in-house legal department positions.
  • Currently licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio, or able to obtain a license to practice in Ohio shortly after joining STERIS.
  • Experience in representing corporations and businesses, negotiating complex business agreements, advising clients on legal, regulatory, risk management, risk avoidance and compliance matters.
  • Experience in managing attorneys, support staff, service providers and a budget.

Preferred:
  • Experience in mergers and acquisitions and business transactions.
  • International law experience.
  • Experience working in the medical device industry.
  • Experience working within a healthcare provider.
