The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a seasoned, strategic, and solutions-driven County Attorney to lead the Office of the County Attorney. This position serves as the chief legal advisor to County leadership, providing counsel on complex municipal, legislative, and civil matters that influence the County's long-term success.

The County Attorney:
  • Leads and manages all operations of the County's legal office, including supervising attorneys, paralegals, and support staff.
  • Advises and represents the Board of County Commissioners, departments, boards, and agencies on legal and policy issues.
  • Develops and reviews contracts, resolutions, ordinances, and legal opinions.
  • Coordinates and oversees outside counsel and ensures effective representation in litigation and specialized matters.
  • Directs legislative affairs—drafting legislation, preparing testimony, and advancing the County's legislative agenda with state and regional partners.
  • Mitigates risk by anticipating legal and operational challenges and developing strategic, preventative solutions.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)

Qualifications:
Education: Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.

Experience: Seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressively responsible legal experience, including significant management experience in government or related civil practice.

License: License to practice law in the State of Maryland required.

Special Requirements: Subject to background investigation.

Compensation Steps:
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary: $175,000 – $210,000 annually, commensurate with experience.

Closing Date: December 12, 2025

Full-time, contract position; 35-hour work week.
