Summary:
Sun Life's FullscopeRMS Legal Team is seeking an insurance and regulatory attorney to join their team as Counsel. Reporting to the General Counsel for the FullscopeRMS business, this role is responsible for providing advice and counsel to the Company's business units on a wide range of issues related to the disability and supplemental health product offerings, and assisting with other matters as they arise. It requires the ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously, each of which impact FullscopeRMS services and its risk profile.

What you will do:
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to the business units associated with FullscopeRMS on a wide range of topics including claims, underwriting, and other operational issues associated with its roles as a direct carrier, third party administrator (TPA) and/or reinsurance intermediary
  • Conduct legal research including statutory, regulatory and case law
  • Interact with business units to learn about the issues they are engaged in and work closely with them and other senior attorneys to draft non-disclosure agreements, reinsurance agreements, administrative services and other contracts. Review existing contracts and provide guidance on contract terms. Evaluating advantages, disadvantages, and risks along with industry and market trends, when making recommendations and decisions
  • Work with State Filing/Compliance team to assist with research and drafting product documents and responses to regulators as necessary
  • Work with Corporate Compliance team and business units to provide guidance on newly enacted laws and regulations and other related compliance functions
  • Engage with and provide others on the FullscopeRMS Legal team legal support with day-to-day legal operational work—legal research, reviewing and drafting contracts and amendments, provide business with practical operational legal guidance
  • Engage with the FullscopeRMS Legal team frequently and identify continuous improvement opportunities to effectively and efficiently provide legal services to our business functions. Incorporating data and technology into the development of solutions
  • Develop creative Client-centered solutions

What you will need to succeed:
  • Knowledge of group disability (STD, LTD), life and supplemental health products, third party administration and reinsurance related to these products, preferred
  • Self-motivated with the ability to handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision
  • Ability to analyze issues that carry potential risk to the Company and provide practical legal guidance to influence a course of action
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lead through influence
  • Embraces collaborative work with stakeholders and other counsel
  • Demonstrated experience with coordinating and managing cross-functional projects and initiatives

Required education and skills:
  • Requires a law degree and knowledge of the insurance industry
  • Minimum 3 years as practicing attorney in a related in-house role or with a law firm providing guidance to related entities
  • Requires a high degree of proficiency in problem solving, fact finding and legal research
  • Demonstrated experience with coordinating and managing cross-functional projects and initiatives
  • Ability to anticipate and resolve problems before they arise
  • Ability to think creatively to resolve, routine, complex, and/or non-routine issues
