Description:Duties & Functions:
- Responsible for overseeing both criminal litigations for serious offenses and complex civil litigations.
- Administrative knowledge, skills and ability to oversee the Court's budget and daily operation.
- Monthly reports to the Tribal Council.
- Must adhere to the Code of Conduct for United States Judges.
- Follow established Tribal policies and those outlined in the Colorado River Indian Tribes Employee Handbook.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Must be a current member in good standing of a state bar; and
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of judicial experience; and
- Must have knowledge of federal Indian law (criminal and civil); and
- Must pass federal, state and tribal background check (credit, criminal history, civil litigations, psychological evaluation, and sex offender registration, driving records).
- A member of the CRIT Appeals Courts, subject to Article 11, (sub-section) 210 (c) of the CRIT Law and Order Code; or
- Persons who have other similar conflicting interests; or
- Have been convicted of a felony; or
- Have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving dishonesty or moral turpitude within the last five (5) years in any federal, tribal or state court; or
- Have been convicted of other criminal offense involving dishonesty or moral turpitude within the last five (5) years in any federal, tribal or state court, or
- Have been convicted of the following crimes in any tribal court within the last five (5) years. For the purpose of this sections, the definition under the Title 18 of the United States Code shall be used as guidelines when required.
- Criminal homicide
- Assault with a deadly weapon
- Assault with an intent to kill
- Assault resulting in substantial bodily injury
- Assault against a minor under the age of sixteen (16)
- Child abuse
- Possession or furnishing narcotics
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Juris Doctorate
- Must possess a current valid driver's license.
- Physical Requirement:
- Physically able to perform duties assigned.
- Occasionally work extended shifts as assigned.
Tribal and Indian Preference:The Colorado River Indian Tribes has implemented a Tribal/CRlT Preference in Employment Policy. Pursuant to this Policy, applicants who possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by this position, and who are enrolled members of the Colorado River Indian Tribes will be given primary preference in hiring and employment for this position. Background Investigation: This position may be subject to a criminal histo1y background check, a suitability background check and/or a Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) check. In addition, some positions are subject to a 101-630 background check in an effort to ensure compliance with Public Law 101-630 "Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act." Candidates must be able to successfully pass all required background checks to qualify for this position.
Drug Screening: All applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening prior to beginning employment and will be subject to random drug testing per the CRIT Employee's Handbook, Substance Abuse Policy.
