HUB International Limited is seeking to fill the newly created position of Chief Counsel-Litigation and Claims . The Chief Counsel will be responsible for leading a team of experienced litigators and paralegals to manage all litigation matters, claims, disputes, and legal challenges brought by and against HUB's business units. This position reports to the Deputy General Counsel, Property & Casualty and will also regularly engage with the CLO and other senior executives, oversee litigation budgets, set reserves, develop policies and procedures, and manage outside counsel. This position is also responsible for managing the Company's responses to subpoenas, conducting internal investigations, and responding to inquiries from government authorities. Oversight of litigation and claims will cover most jurisdictions across the United States and Canada.

Responsibilities:
  • Build out and lead a world-class team to manage all of HUB's litigation and claims activity
  • Lead the management of and strategy for all of the Company's errors and omissions, restrictive covenant and other litigation and claims
  • Manage law firm and other legal service vendor relationships, including invoice management, rate negotiations and alternative fee arrangements
  • Create strategies and establish internal practices to mitigate litigation risks and ensure effective responses when such risks materialize
  • Monitor litigation developments relevant to HUB's businesses
  • Collaborate cross-functionally within Hub's Legal team to advise and assist on litigation-adjacent matters such as regulatory inquiries, employment claims, and M&A due diligence
  • Manage budget effectively
  • Implement and oversee records collection, preservation and management protocols, e-discovery, and litigation holds
  • Assume responsibility for HUB's broker standards
  • Formalize Company-wide errors and omissions prevention training
  • Take responsibility for and improve the Legal Department's matter management system
  • Serve as liaison to the Company's finance, IT and communications functions

Basic Qualifications:
  • J.D. and admission to the bar in one or more U.S. jurisdictions
  • 20+ years of combined broad litigation experience at a law firm, in-house, and/or governmental agency
  • Experience managing attorneys and legal professionals
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse litigation docket

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Relevant in-house management experience with an insurance brokerage
  • Experience and comfort with technology
  • Experience overseeing the work of outside counsel and vendors, and effectively managing to budget
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and deftly navigate through a rapidly changing, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to quickly identify, understand, and resolve legal and business issues
