The Role at a GlanceThe AVP, Legal, Artificial Intelligence Counsel will provide legal advice on all aspects of the development, implementation, use, and monitoring of artificial intelligence (AI) systems and platforms including, but not limited to, AI governance, compliance best practices relating to AI, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements governing the use of AI in the life insurance, annuities, retail funds, retirement solutions and group benefits industries.
Ideal Candidate:
- A combination of legal expertise, understanding of AI technologies, and experience in corporate or tech-focused legal strategies.
- Familiarity with evolving AI regulatory frameworks and awareness of legal, compliance and/or ethical considerations in AI development and deployment.
- Ability to align business significant objectives with AI governance and potential risks . Cross-functional collaboration who can build strong partnerships, is adaptive and forward-thinking.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Maintains knowledge on current and emerging developments and trends for assigned area(s) of responsibility; assesses the impact and collaborates with management to incorporate new trends and developments in current and future strategies.
- Directs and enhances organizational initiatives by positively influencing and supporting change management and/or departmental/enterprise initiatives within assigned area(s) of responsibility.
- Identifies and directs strategic process improvements that significantly improve quality across the team, department and/or business unit for assigned area(s) of responsibility.
- Directs/executes approved strategy decisions and contributes to strategy creation for assigned area(s) of responsibility.
- Provides strategic direction to build and enhance the capability for their assigned area(s) of responsibility.
- Identifies and directs strategic process improvements that significantly improve quality across the team, department and/or business unit for their assigned area(s) of responsibility.
- Provides subject matter expertise to team members and applicable internal/external stakeholders on complex assignments/projects for their assigned area(s) of responsibility.
- Analyzes and provides strategic legal advice to business leaders and other stakeholders on changes and developments in laws, regulations and regulatory guidance at the federal, state and local level relating to the development, implementation, use and monitoring of AI systems.
- Acts as a subject matter expert who will be sought after for advice, counsel, and judgment on AI-related matters.
- Identifies and communicates legal exposure and risk in a timely and proactive manner to key stakeholders.
- Contributes to AI-related policies, practices and guidelines that promote fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethical considerations in AI applications throughout the insurance value chain.
- Provides legal advice and counsel to key stakeholders in business and functional areas on policies, procedures and controls to address risk relating to the use of AI.
- Engages with industry groups and committees, including those organized by relevant trade associations, to track changes in AI-related laws, regulations and regulatory guidance and best practices for addressing AI-related risk & collaborates with sr. management to incorporate new trends & best practices in current/future strategies.
- Reviews and drafts language for contracts, RFP responses and other legal documents that relate to the development, implementation and/or use of AI.
- Collaborates with IT, Compliance, Risk and business teams to ensure AI systems adhere to relevant regulations, industry standards, and support regulatory reporting needs and state/regulatory examinations.
- Manages and directs outside counsel as appropriate.
What We're Looking For:
Education:
- Undergraduate degree
- J.D. from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved school and a Member of the Bar in good standing is required
Experience:
- 7+ Years attorney preferably either at a law firm or financial services company
- 1+ 3 Years of Insurance, and AI and/or relevant technology-related legal experience a plus
