Working Conditions:
Position located at 111 Grand Avenue, Suite 11-100, Oakland, Alameda County.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their work sites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

The Bay Area Legal Office of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Legal Division is seeking well-qualified, highly motivated individuals who want to work in a multifaceted public entity law office on a wide variety of legal matters. Our attorneys represent Caltrans in State and Federal courts in all phases of litigation and trial work. They also advise and assist the Caltrans in delivering projects.
The Bay Area Legal Office is located in Oakland and is a mid-size legal office with approximately 30 attorneys handling legal matters for Caltrans' Districts 1, 4 and 5 which geographically span the California coastal counties from the Oregon border to Santa Barbara, including the nine Bay Area Counties. The office offers a supportive and dynamic work environment where attorneys are given substantial responsibility and opportunities for professional growth and development at every stage of their careers.
Junior attorneys are assigned to a practice group and are trained in all aspects of the practice. They are given early opportunities to develop their skills by engaging in trial and writ practice. Mid-level attorneys are expected to handle all aspects of a case including taking and defending depositions, taking cases to trial as first or second chair counsel and appellate work.
All employees receive training in Department policies and practices along with continuing legal education. All Attorneys may receive promotions in place to Attorney III or Attorney IV based on successful performance, available funds, and compliance with labor union requirements.
