This position serves as an Attorney Advisor located in the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Legislative Affairs (OLA), in Washington, D.C.

The Attorney Advisor is responsible for providing legal advice; assisting in the management of the Department of Justice's relationship with Congress; and planning, evaluating, and keeping managers aware of progress on legislation of interest to the Department of Justice.

Duties include:
  • Assisting the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legislative Affairs in the management of the Department of Justice's relationship with Congress and Members of Congress.
  • Preparing responses to Congressional inquiries or inquiries from individual Members of Congress under supervision of senior attorneys.
  • Assisting with coordination of intra- and inter-agency agency clearance on legislative and other matters of interest to the Department of Justice with the Office of Management and Budget or other Executive Agencies. This includes preparing reports to the Office of Management and Budget on enrolled bills awaiting approval of the President, and in those cases where vetoes are recommended, the preparation of suitable veto messages.
  • Evaluating proposed legislation, Congressional inquiries, and matters related to the Department of Justice's relation with Congress to aid managers and other key stakeholders in making informed decisions on program, planning, legislative, and policy issues.
  • Assisting senior attorneys in legislative procedures to develop proposed legislation. This includes working with staff on legislation, developing congressional support, preparing or assuring testimony is prepared concerning legislation, following up on status and developing reports on same, and contacting other Department of Justice attorneys and officials to elicit comments with respect to proposed legislation and to reconcile conflicting views where possible.
  • Updating the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legislative Affairs, legislative and policy personnel in other components, and/or other relevant entities on the progress of legislation of interest to the Department of Justice.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a J.D. degree (or equivalent), be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) and have at least 1 year post-J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience. Prior Congressional experience is preferred, but not required.
