Overview: The Associate General Counsel is responsible for providing services and advice with regard to all legal matters affecting the Credit Union. Assuming primary and principal responsibility for defending claims and litigation brought against the Credit Union. When necessary, initiating and prosecuting litigation on behalf of Credit Union. Performing independent contract reviews and negotiations. Providing regulatory compliance advice and document preparation. Performing legal research with respect to various issues affecting the Credit Union. Providing independent and comprehensive legal counsel and advice to management and employees. Performing such other functions and duties as requested by Deputy General Counsel.

Responsibilities:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Zealously defends, or ensures that assigned outside counsel zealously defends, all claims and litigation brought against the Credit Union.
  • When applicable, zealously prosecutes all claims and litigation commenced by the Legal Department on behalf of the Credit Union.
  • Provides advice and takes appropriate action to protect the credit union's interest in connection with bankruptcy cases filed by members, vendors, or other parties affecting the Credit Union.
  • Reviews, negotiates and /or drafts appropriate revisions to credit union contracts.
  • Provides advice with regard to, and prepares documents to ensure compliance with, applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations.
  • Keeps abreast of all new laws, rules, case law and legal issues affecting the credit union and takes appropriate actions in response thereto.
  • Interacts in an independent manner with attorneys and members on various matters.
  • Researches complex legal issues affecting the Credit Union.
  • Answers day-to-day inquires and questions posed by credit union officers and employees.
  • Confirms the validity of Powers of Attorney, guardianships, and other legal documentation submitted to the credit union.
  • Provides weekly written reports on status of significant matters he or she is working on and participates in departmental meetings.
  • Performs other duties and functions assigned to him or her by Deputy General Counsel. Limited travel may be required to New York Courts.
  • Perform other related duties as requested and special projects as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice law before the courts of the State of New York is required.
  • Admission to one or more Federal District and/or Bankruptcy Courts in New York is a plus.
  • Admission to any one or more state courts of New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania is a plus.
  • Five years of law office or Legal Department experience with at least two years of experience in credit union or banking related matters.
  • In-court experience is a plus.
  • Ability to take ownership of projects and tasks.
  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving and communication skills with ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Exceptional writing skills.
  • Experience with consumer protection laws and regulations is a plus: UDAAP; EFTA/Reg. E; TILA/Reg. Z; GLBA/Reg. P; FCRA/Reg. v, FDCPA; ECOA/Reg. B; TCPA, etc.
  • Highly ethical.
  • Ability to perform in a high-volume environment and meet deadlines while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
  • Technologically proficient.
