As the Associate General Counsel, you will participate in the development and execution of global and regional patent strategies and manage day to day patent activities to support multiple product development programs. You are a solutions-oriented advisor who anticipates and understands our business needs and offers practical solutions to advance our objectives while protecting and defending our interests.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with global patent group to oversee and manage our NA patent portfolio, including the filing, maintenance and protection of our patents.
  • Ensure that our patent strategy aligns and supports our business strategy.
  • Harvest, protect and commercialize intellectual property arising from the company's R&D programs.
  • Assist with strategic IP due diligence, including conducting prior art and patent searches and analyzing the patent portfolios of competitors and potential collaborators.
  • Efficiently communicate complex intellectual property issues to technical and non-technical personnel at all levels of the organization, including senior management.
  • Manage external counsel and our patent budget.
  • Implement internal process, procedures and training centered on intellectual property identification and protection

Education & Experience:
  • Law degree (Juris Doctor) from an accredited institution is required.
  • Admission in good standing to a state bar; North Carolina admission a plus but not required.
  • 10 or more years of experience in patent matters gained either in a law firm or an in-house environment.
  • A broad range of patent-related legal expertise required, including patent preparation, both U.S. and foreign prosecution, IP due diligence and strategic counseling.
  • Proven analytical capacity, superior legal and business judgment; ability to recognize business impact of legal advice.
  • Must work well in a matrix organization.
