The Associate General Counsel will be responsible for handling a wide range of matters including IP licensing and distribution; copyright and other intellectual property matters; non-profit tax matters such as the deductibility of donations and UBIT; data privacy; IT license, software, and service agreements; individual giving; gift vehicles such as family foundations and donor advised funds; corporate and individual sponsorships; exhibition loan agreements; transfer agreements; goods and services agreements; preparing and filing cy pres petitions; basic contract review; and a variety of other matters as directed by the General Counsel. The expected salary range for this position is $180,000 to $187,000.

The salary is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization, and scope of experience. General Qualifications:
  • A desire to join a mission-driven higher education institution and in-house legal and compliance operation
  • Knowledge of New York not-for-profit and education law, intellectual property and licensing law, gift giving, and federal tax exemption laws and regulations
  • Experience in basic contract review
  • Experience in government, an educational institution, a non-profit institution, or the equivalent
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others in a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to multi-task, and manage multiple matters at once
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to balance legal risks with business strategy
  • The highest level of integrity and attention to servicing the institution
  • A deep appreciation of the performing arts and a dedication to providing the highest caliber performing arts education

Required Qualifications:
  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and New York State bar admission
  • 5+ years of experience
  • Professional experience providing legal services to non-profit organizations, institutions of higher education, or cultural organizations is strongly preferred.
