Summary:
Under administrative direction, this position performs professional legal services within the Legal Affairs Section of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office (“LPSO”). Work involves researching legal questions, preparing legal documents, rendering legal opinions, consulting with LPSO personnel relative to legal questions and analysis, assisting with responding to public record requests, as well as pleadings and discovery requests in civil and criminal litigation, and acts as an instructor at the ALETA Academy (aka - police academy.) Performs related work as directed by the Sheriff and Chief Legal Counsel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The most important and essential job function of the position is attitude and includes the following: getting along with co- workers, responding politely to members of the community, working as a team member, functioning under pressure, and responding in a positive manner to supervision. Other duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist the Chief Legal Counsel in providing advice and counsel to the Sheriff, members of the Command Staff and employees of the Sheriff's Office regarding legal issues and in support of Sheriff's Office operations.
- Review, revise and assist with drafting contracts and other agreements entered into by the Sheriff's Office with third parties.
- Review, evaluate and respond to criminal pleadings served upon the Sheriff, LPSO and/or any of its employees.
- Review, evaluate and assist with responding to public records requests.
- Review and evaluate Subpoenas and/or Subpoenas Duces Tecum served on the Sheriff, LPSO and/or any of its employees in pending criminal or civil matters and assist with responding to same.
- Review and evaluate all pleadings seeking expungement of criminal records and all applications and supporting documentation submitted in support of obtaining U-Visa Certification.
- Perform legal research and provide legal advice and opinions as needed.
- Consult with LPSO deputies regarding legal issues, both criminal and civil, that may arise during day-to-day operations.
- Provide advice and guidance regarding criminal law and procedure to LPSO.
- Legal Instructor for ALETA Academy.
- Act as Liaison between LPSO and the District Attorney's Office for the 15th Judicial District of the State of Louisiana.
- Prepare reports, letters and other correspondence when necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or Chief Legal Counsel.
