Job Summary
Assists City Attorney in representing the City, its component units and its boards and commissions in litigation, administrative hearings, and other matters requiring legal representation. Provides counsel to the departments, employees, councils, boards, commissions, and committees of such organizations.
This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of work.
Duties
- Conducts research in connection with legal issues pertaining to the City, and its component units; serves as legal counsel at meetings when requested; and provides legal advice to various departments, employees, councils, boards, commissions, and committees, as required.
- Prepares information for meetings of the City and its component units by gathering information, researching legal issues, and drafting ordinances and resolutions.
- Performs duties relating to various aspects of litigation, as assigned, prepares or assists in preparation for trial and cooperates with outside counsel when appropriate.
- Negotiates, reviews and prepares contracts, deeds, leases and other legal documents and resolves disputes associated with such documents.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- Law Degree (Juris Doctorate) from an ABA-accredited Law School.
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and in good standing with the Texas State Bar Association.
- Three or more years experience in a municipal law role.
- Valid Texas driver’s license with acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days).
Preferred:
Bilingual in English/Spanish

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skills in oral and written communication. Knowledge of municipal law including zoning, real property, competitive bidding, authority of home-rule cities, civil and criminal litigation, civil service, public information, and open meetings. Ability to use calculators and computers, including on-line research tools.
Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job. In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.
