Cooley LLP is recruiting 2L summer associates for our summer program to join our Real Estate Zoning and Land Use practice in our Reston, VA office.

We assist owners, operators, developers, lenders, tenants and institutional investors and advisors with a wide variety of real property and related capital markets transactions as well as litigation.

Areas of Practice:
Land Use and Zoning
  • Assist owners, developers and investors with all facets of land use and zoning, including planning, development, entitlement, operation and leasing
  • Work to secure critical approvals, such as comprehensive plan amendments, special exceptions, rezonings, variances, special use permits, bond approvals, wetlands permits and subdivision and/or site plan approvals
  • Assist in preparing, managing, and overseeing rezoning, special exception and other land development applications, predominately focused on Northern Virginia jurisdictions
  • Undertake land use, zoning, title, and survey due diligence
  • Research, monitor, and report on revisions to local land use policies and zoning ordinances
  • Monitor client projects with project teams to include civil engineers, architects, citizen groups, planning commissioners and elected officials at the local, state and federal levels
  • Attend public hearings and assist in preparing public presentations to represent clients' interests
  • Work directly with clients and planning staff of various jurisdictions
  • Assist with correspondence with elected officials to discuss proposed land use projects
  • Participate in local land use, transportation and real estate associations, and forums

Note: The position provides the opportunity to work during the summer on real estate transactions and finance specialty as well.

The expected salary for this position is based on an annualized rate of pay of $225,000.

Job Requirements:
A background or strong interest in commercial real estate, public policy, urban planning, urban design, or related field is helpful, but not required.
